James Brownlee and Martha Thomson
of Headlesscross Farm in Shotts
 

 

James Brownlee born 1769 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. James was the proprietor of Headlesscross Farm. He married Martha Thomson on 7 June 1799 in Cambusnethan[1].

They had issue:

James Brownlee born 3 April 1800[2][3] and baptized 10 April 1800[4] in Lanarkshire and Lillias Barrie born c1801[5] in Lanarkshire. Lillias was the daughter of John Barrie, farmer, and Mary Forrest. James was a farmer at Headlescross Farm in Cambusnethan and it is noted on the 1851 Census that he was a farmer of 110 acres A Moorland 7 Oct[6](ober). James died 31 December 1890[7] aged 91 years and Lilias (sic) died at 10 am at Headlesscross on 1 January 1887 aged 86 years[8][9].

They had issue:

1. Mary Brownlee born 1828[10] in Cambusnethan. Banns of Marriage: 2 April 1844 in Currie, Midlothian[11] and on 23 November 1849 in Shotts[12], Lanarkshire (perhaps Headlesscross / Headlescross Farm) to William Baillie[13] was born 12 September 1820 in Torphican, West Lothian. Residence: 1881, Bedlormie Farm, Torphican.

They had issue:

1. William John Ritchies Baillie, b. February 4, 1855, Shotts.

2. Lilias Barrie Baillie, b. May 26, 1857, Shotts.

3. Ann Smith Baillie, born August 29, 1859, Shotts.

4. Ludovick Baillie, born June 12, 1862, Shotts; died December 26, 1885 of Typhoid Fever at Ransfield House, Ratho.

5. Alexander Baillie, born March 11, 1865, Torphican, West Lothian.

6. David Baillie, born June 5, 1868, Torphican, West Lothian.

7. Robert Baillie, born November 3, 1870, Torphican, West Lothian.

8. Mary Brownlee Baillie, born April 25, 1873, Torphican, West Lothian.

James Brownlee and Lillias Barrie also had:

4. John Brownlee born c1834[16] in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. Employed on the farm in 1851[17]. Later John was a landowner of 160 acres, 100 Arable[18]. John married Alicia born c1840[19].

1. Alicia Brownlee born c1864[20] in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.

3. William Brownlee born c1869[22] in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.

4. John Brownlee born c1871[23] in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.

James Brownlee and Lillias Barrie also had:

5. William Brownlee born c1836[24] in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. On 15 January 1863 at Broughty Ferry, after Banns according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland, William married Ellen (Helen) Whyte-Hughes born c1839 in Dundee and died of liver disease on 7 December 1880 aged 42 years[25]. William was the Lord Provost Dundee 1878-1881. A portrait by Sergeant hangs in the Town Hall. He died aged 78 at 2 pm on 29 July 1914 at 6 Union Crescent, Dundee[26]. His usual residence was 9 Clarendon Terrace, Dundee[27]. William had suffered from an enlarged prostate and died from shock after the prostate was removed[28]. Ellen (Helen) was the daughter of Anderson Hughes, formerly a builder and Helen White (or Whyte)[29].

They had issue:

1. James Anderson Hughes Brownlee was born 27 December 1863 in Angus, Dundee. He was a Mechanical Engineer and builder. He married Barbara Ritchie.

2. Ellen Whyte Hughes Brownlee born 13 April 1865 in Angus, Dundee and died 19 July 1892 in Dundee. Ellen was married (Banns) according to the Forms of the Established Church of Scotland by Charles M. Grant, St Marks Parish, Dundee on 19 July 1892[30] at Arnhall, Perth Road, Dundee to Robert N. Matthewson a general merchant, born c1842[31] in Calcutta, India, son of William Matthewson, rope spinner (deceased) and Jane Turpie (deceased). At the time of her marriage, Ellen lived at 9 Clarendon Terrace, Dundee[32].

3. Walter Watson Hughes Brownlee was born 19 April 1869 in Angus, Dundee.

James Brownlee and Lillias Barrie also had:

6. Alexander Brownlee born c1836[33] in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. Scholar in 1851[34].

7. Robert Brownlee born c1839[35] in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. Scholar is 1851[36].

8. Lillias Brownlee born c1843[37] in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. It is noted on the 1861 Census that Lillias was a visitor to the Gibbson household at an address noted as 1 Private House, Cambusnethan, in Lanarkshire[38].

James Brownlee and Martha Thomson also had:

2. John Brownlee born 1 August 1803, baptized 13 May 1803 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire

3. Catharine Brownlee born 25 March 1806[39] in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.

4. Robert Brownlee born 30 April 1808[40] in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.

In the 1861 Census, Lillias Brownlee was a visitor at the Gibbson’s household in Cambusnethan. The following is the household on census night[43]:

1. Thomas Gibbson born c1804 in Carstairs, occupation as a Railway Labourer who married Elizabeth (Gibbson) born c1809 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. Occupation as a Railway Wife[44]. Could this Elizabeth be a sister of James Brownlee, farmer in Headlescross?

Recent event at Headlesscross Farm - POLICE are hunting thieves who broke into Headlesscross Farm, Shotts. The intruders stole a three-figure sum of cash from the property in a break-in between 1.30am and 3am on Sunday, February 28. Contact Shotts Police office on (01501) 751222.

 

George Russell, Carluke, wrote “The Headlesscross family, near Shotts and Allanton, is where the Daviesdykes Brownlies (an ancient group of Covenanters and landowners) had a line.”
